Almost back when God was a young lad, BT announced their intention to drop loved and hated demand based rollouts of ADSL across the country, we also learned that the vast majority of remaining un-enabled changes would get a service ready date announced by the end of June. Well, today is the end of June, and BT have done just that, and detailed service dates for over 1200 exchanges in the UK, including 63 exchanges which will be enabled earlier than BT previously detailed.
We have two lists for you. The first (here) shows 63 exchanges which have previously held RFS dates, and that BT have brought these forward. On average, exchanges in this category now have an earlier RFS date by some 70 days (the "winner" being Whitehills, which will be enabled just shy of 10 months earlier than previously detailed).
The second list (here) lists the 1145 exchanges which have today received their RFS date.
How are these dates conceived? Well its not out of a hat as some would think. SamKnows.com has an interesting quote from BTWholesale.
| "You may be interested to know how we have arrived at the dates for the Broadband rollouts. Firstly the BT Core network teams undertook an extensive investigation of the whole BT fibre and SDH network to determine which exchanges had sufficient network available to enable them for Broadband now. Those that didn't then had new network elements planned from them to the nearest BT ATM node.
In parallel, investigations were also carried out on the local accommodation and power at the 1000+ sites to ensure the buildings could accommodate the new ADSL equipment. Again, those buildings that couldn't had bespoke jobs raised to bring them up to the required Broadband standard. Lastly a separate team looked at the likely take-up at each exchange over the next few years and dimensioned the ADSL equipment accordingly - with our three Broadband suppliers; Alcatel, Marconi and Fujitsu.
We then put all this information together and each exchange received an RFS date appropriate to its core backhaul, accommodation & power and ADSL kit requirements. This work then produced a programme beginning in October 2004* running through to July 2005 which will see all these exchanges enabled for Broadband. At every stage the best possible dates were used to determine each RFS date."
* the reason the programme commences Oct. 2004 is that the preceding weeks are full now with sites that triggered organically through the Pre-Reg. scheme." |

A word of warning. These lists still contain dates well into 2005, and over a year from now - eg, Marton Heath in the North West (good fishing area for those interested) with an RFS date of 27th July 2005.
