The number of users connecting to the internet via broadband has overtaken
dial-up subscriptions for the fist time, according to figures released by BT.
New figures from BT Group, reveal that, including cable connections, there
are now more than 7.4 million broadband customers, surpassing for the first time
the number of dial-up connections in the country.
This includes the 1.7 million using BT's own service, a further 3.7 million
connected across it's network by rival ISP's, and 2 million cable
customers from NTL and Telewest.
Broadband has certainly come a long way since it's introduction into the UK
three years ago, with as many people being able to connect to a broadband
connection (99.6%) which is equivalent to the proportion with running water!
| "I know people's memories are short but I don't think that
anybody three years ago had even the faintest hope this would
happen. I remember when I came into BT [in April 2002] it was not in
anyone's imagination." |
| Ben Verwaayen, the chief executive of BT |
