BSkyB is set to announce that it has plans to offer Sky Broadband later this
week.
The new offer will be available free to it's premium customers which are those
who subscribe to the top Sky world package at £41 a month, which accounts for
over half it's 7.7 million customers.
Now before those with thoughts of free internet access get excited there is
as usual a catch, the broadband service won't actually offer internet access,
but it will allow customers to watch any one of 200 movies or sports programmes
on demand.
To use the service, consumers will need to have a computer that is hooked up
to a broadband internet line. The programmes can then be watched either on the
computer or played through a television, although there seems room for
integration with the existing Sky+ decoder/recorder.
Although this isn't true Video on Demand, more of a kind of 'halfway house'
it is a step in the right direction, and it's only a matter of time before an
advanced Sky+ box will be available.
