Hi all,
New forum user here
Considering signing up for AOL silver, £15 a month, unlimited, 2 meg and free wlan router.
Will i be tied in to using the usual very bad AOL software?
I ask this as i will be taking their own router which is free in the package. I assume, having set up several wlan routers, i do not need to install all the usual ****, but just wondered if anyone could confirm this is the case with the hardware supplied by AOL?
I did ask a few @IT' friends of their opinion on AOL, they simply responded not to touch them, but gave no good reasons..
Appreciate any and all opinions. This seems a great deal to me, still trying to find the catch.

AOL software has had a bad neme since the days of dial-up, but my son is on the Silver and uses their router without the AOL software.
I think they have realised that everyone doesn't want all the **** which used to come with AOL packages.

That's the answer i was hoping for.. They have such a good deal (for our needs), i just needed to know i wasn't going to have to infect my laptop with the AOL software..

Hello SB!! I understand yr concerns totally, was an aol user yrs ago on a dial up. hated it, hated their s/ware, hated them,.... BUT....
Tried to get online at new yr and every other ISP or Portal just messed me about until eventually I turned to the enemy.
Am on Silver package too, and cannot fault them for customer service and also swiftness of modem arrival etcetera.
++IMPORTANT++ My concerns were same as yrs, and after receiving same advice about AOLBrowser decided to go for it. Is possible, but found it hard getting info, and AOL lit. said I couldn`t set up connx. without ethernet(only had wireless card), BUT IT IS POSSIBLE!!!
Whatever you do, DON`T put their CD in yr drive, it will sneak their browser in there.
Make sure you know how to access the router wireless or not by typing 192.168.0.1 in yr browser and then default password and stuff you will find on bottom of the router. Once in router, input yr screenname and password( btw,plug in router b4 turning on yr pc once network is setup in LAN menu (in networks on control panel) the only place possible. Then, in the WAN menu, select "g only".
If u "test" the screen name, you should b online by then. if not, just phone them up. 7.5p per min ain`t bad frm BT landline, but it worked 4 me after a little bit of consultation..
Also, had to reply as had same dilemma as you and also the other guy lives in King`s Lynn, where I was Born.

That`s the WAN menu in the router, and the LAN menu on yr PC, just to avoid confusion.
Also, mine (router)is setup as PPoE Encapsulation and ADSL/Multiplexing as LLC based. MTU in WAN menu works at 1400 but don`t change it unless u have to. That applies to all of these instructions. First thing, enter screename and password once on the router page, the try clicking test. after that, try the "g only" thing.
Good luck finding yr wayaround.Always the best way to learn. Don`t change anything else unless yr told to. You can restore factory defaults by sticking thin thing in reset hole at back of router, assuming is a NETGEAR one.

Yes there is no way on earth i'd be putting an AOL cd anywhere near my laptop, i thought they might try to slip their browser in there! I didn't even allow Msoft to install there IE7 actually! I'm a firefox kid all the way..
I figure i can handle the manual set-up.. done it a couple of times on stand alone stuff like netgear router, and a bt homehub for my mate.. although i'm no expert..
One question.. Why do you say set to 'g only'? i had intended setting to mixed mode to enable my phone to access the network.. as my phone is 'b'..

AOL - I had a nightmare with those trying to get through to them when my broadband kept shutting down for no-apparent reason, I was sure it was the connection with my phone line.
After hours and hours of trying to get through I decided to compare different prices around and see which is good and what packages there are, I was reffered to www.Moneysupermarket.com/broadband, by several IT companies and also friends told me to go onto their site, and after doing so, I recommend this to you aswell.
Its a price comparison site which lets you choose what kind of package you are looking for and gives you the best deals..
check it out, always worth a look, ya neva now you could beat your price...simple to use aswell
