I cannot get DAoC to work when i use my Netgear router (the 834?) and AOL Broadband. (It's a standard wired network as opposed to wireless.)
If on the other hand, i connect via DSL USB modem, it's perfect! I've opened the suggested ports on the Netgear, i've checked no firewalls are running in XP, I've even gone as far as opening DMZ on the router, and still it wouldn't work.
I installed a software firewall for when using USB, and it confirms the ports that the game wants to use as i get alerts popping up relevant to the port numbers.
I'm at a loss what to do next.
Is the Netgear not a good router to use via AOL maybe? I'm also having issues loading web pages in IE (they load fine in AOL's GUI)
I've had the router tested independently, and it works like a charm.
If anyone can throw any help on this matter, i'd be grateful |

weird one this mate 
I for one when changing the DMZ would reboot the router and make sure that all the settings are stored. I know for a fact that AOL do have a "firewall" type system on their network and this maybe causing a few issues.
Are you using any other firewall software at all ? If so this might be stopping it connecting correctly as you would have 2 firewalls on the setup.
Sorry I'm clutching @ straws but I've never used AOL since 1993

Hi,
You are not going to like what I tell you now. . . 
I suspect that your primary problem is going to be your connection. AOL.
AOL has a funny (and proprietary) means of connecting its members to the internet. It is essentially an inward looking system that disregards most standards on the internet.
The prime issue is your IP Address, and the way AOL handles it. AOL uses "Blocks" of IPs for members. In any one period of a session you will have half a dozen or more IP adddresses.
So you are connected to a game server and the server is sending you info on IP 123.234.568.9 but 3 mins later you are on 123.234.587.56 - connection to the game server is gone. 
You would be better off planning your move to another ISP, there are a few good ones and details of most of them are here.

Nothing wrong with AOL (they are not my ISP incidentally, i use Plusnet, i am helping someone out using my router)
Set DNS on the router, set the DNS on the games PC to point to the router, changed MTU on the router ... and everything works perfectly.
So, nothing wrong with AOL (in fact quite an impressive ISP) just a question ensuring settings were correctly configured.
Never mind, it's fixed now. |
