Post subject: 5861 (v5.3.80) NO LINK - please help before it's binned!  PostPosted: Dec 08, 2004 - 10:03 PM

Please help, my 5861 is one big tale of woe. But I have got it back in the land of the ether once more. All looks well as it boots (reading console port) but it does not attempt to connect to the link. IFS shows DMT/0 off and ATM-ECHO/1 off and no other high speed links, the link led does not attempt sync. This is something with the upgrade (or me doing the upgrade) to 5380 - reverted back I can log in to my isp okay (can't surf but that'll be the setup). I have one 'remote' setup (my ISP says pppoa) but I think it is more basic that the detail. I did d/l the autoexec (for nat) and run that (looked okay). I feel I must be a file missing (my dmt.dat is only 28bytes but I think the orginal was too) or a pretty elementry setting. Regards M.

Weird one that, you say the console doesn't say anything after it's booted? Are you sure it doesn't say any errors?

Oh and you did reboot after uploading the autoexec.bat.....

No errors I can see (looked & looked). Have seen errors in the past that I've sorted (basic things and duff asic file I've restored). It is just waiting for something/someone to say go!
Is there an 'in between' firmware I can try that still has functionality.
Was I supposed to add something else to the kernel and autoexec.bat uploads?
I'm missing something here and I think it's me!

PS I did see on the console port the 'reboot' after the autoexec.bat (I thought it odd because it didn't realise it needed to restart to exec the file and boot to make it effective.
I hope nobody minds the great long post, here is this morning's console list (cold boot). I've replaced a few ids with $$$$ - they printed the correct stuff originally. can you see what's wrong??

I'm at work now, so I can't compare it to anything, but a couple of things look a bit strange.

Code:
Disconnect timeout (in seconds)...... 60
IP address translation............... off
Authentication....................... disabled

I've tried various, the ip translation has been on & off, authen dis/chap/pap, although the timeout has always been 60s (it doesn't even try for 59s) - I think I'll place it next to the bin (ready). Can anyone recommend a good replacement please (router/adsl modem/firewall/good user interface/pretty lights).

Reset it to factory values, then run the autoexec.bat script.....if not I'm not sure.

Steve (you hero), that's done the trick.

Now I have the link tried and up (Grn).

I've used the quick launch and the oddments have gone:-
Disconnect timeout (in seconds)...... 2147483647
IP address translation............... on
Authentication....................... enabled
Authentication level required........ CHAP

Although I'm not sure what the "remote's password" should be?
(I've made it =mine)
-
So almost there, link negotiates, ifs looks like:-
# ifs
Interface Speed In % Out % Protocol State Connection
ETHERNET/0 10.0mb 0%/0% 0%/0% (Ethernet) OPENED
DMT/0 576kb D 0%/0% (ATM) OPENED
285kb U 0%/0% (ATM) OPENED
ATM-ECHO/1 576kb D 0%/0% (ATM) OPENED
285kb U 0%/0% (ATM) OPENED
CONSOLE/0 9600 b 0%/0% 0%/0% (TTY) OPENED
ATM-VC/2 576kb D 0%/0% (ATM/PPP) STANDBY
285kb U 0%/0% (ATM/PPP) STANDBY

I've no wan flash. How can encourage the paperweight (nearly) to 'connect'.
All help is/has been greatly appreciated. Laughing

The remote password is the one your ISP gave you, put it in the 'easy setup' GUI

That's in there - I was thinking of the dial-in security remotes's password (where I've mine set using chap), anyway I've made them the same.
What will kick start the vc/2 connection?
