I've tried rem start xx (oops, left one clue in my listings!), does nothing for it. I can't get 5.3.80 to even try for a line, hence back to early version.
At this point I'm going to thank you very much for all the help and pointers, they were very much appreciated. I did make some progress but not enough.
I have borrowed another brand and that is working (did take a while to setup but looks 100%). Unfortunately it has to go back to it's owner soon so I'm looking out for a new model/router with nat/firewall I can easily, yet comprehensively, program for my needs, and can I buy pdq - hopefully locally. Any thoughts ??
I am binning the 5861.
<temporarily adsl up mode!>

Hello - I had a similar problem, which was down to using a weird version of the firmware (probably didn`t check the part number properly etc.).
Everything seemed OK from the console, and the router looked like it was fine - LAN traffic was grand, as well as administration screens, etc., but no WAN link at all. I eventually got the router going using a different firmware, but there were problems with the web admin.
Eusty posted this link last night:

Have a look in there and try a more recent firmware/ASIC fle - it certainly did the trick for me |

Sorry, not been back for a while.
I tried various firmware versions and only had limited success. The unit was binned as it was a pile of ....
The loan router got me going but I knew it had an intermittent fault which popped up when I tried to use snmp on it. I bought a new brand and (touch wood) no problems.
Wish I'd done that from the start. This one really was out of the box, enter my details and up and working. Not even an expensive brand.
I don't think its worth anyone spending this much time on a box that's as likely to burn up sooner or later.
