Hi,
Not sure if anyone has seen the www.phpbb.com website recently but it has been brought down by "some exploit" or other.
Was wondering if anyone may have an idea what??
I suspect a play on Apache but am not sure . . and would appreciate thoughts on this.
Also, while rambling on, could someone explain the connection between the Services.exe running and the hosts file in Windows (2K and XP)
Regards,

Hi Steve,
Ok, I have seen on a number of occasions, particularly after a net problem of one sort or another that the services.exe process is running at 89, 95, 98, 99 od % of processor time.
Not much time to do anything else (like compute! for example). I was working on another Win 2K box an decided to update the hosts file from an empty one to mine, afer which I got the 99% CPU time being used.
Now that happening on a P233MMX is not funny! Nothing happens, and noting can be done.
Changing back the host file and - normal....

Strange!!! The obvious answer is to use a blank hosts file and install some ad blockinig firmware, or just to dump IE!
A quick google turns up nothing |

Hi,
SpyBot Serch & Destroy will modify your hosts fil e to block access to domains that are known to be "dodgy" . . This is done through the "Immunisation" process. any url not known - the hosts file is checked and you root your "Dodgy" urlls to the 127.0.0.1 loopback address. . .
Strange though. . .

i have my screen on 1600x1200 at 76hz and when i used winamp it came on so small so i double sized it but the play list refuses to double size so it looks goffy and i can barely read the songs.. is there a way to get the playlist to grow?
EDIT: [links removed, but one of the better spam attempts we have had!!] |

Hi,
Have you considered resizing the window for the playlist?
Mouse over the bottom right corner of the playlist should turn your cursor to an arrow (pointing diagonally - left top and bottom right) just like resizing any other window.
Then just drag to the size you want. This can be done for all individual WinAmp windows, docked or undocked.
Damn, missed that Spam!

Services.exe is used to end and start system processes which have hung, crashed or just need a helping hand to end or start.
Maybe setting your hung-app-time-out in regedit could stop this, do a search for HungAppTimeout press ctrl+4 in regedit and set the timeout to around 1000 or 500 if there is no drastic improvement. |

Hi,
Why would this only be affected by a change of the hosts file though....?
