Wow! At last! I just changed the MTU Size in my router setting from 1458 to 1500. Most things seem to be working fine. MSN is back & I can log into my bank. I didn't need to update any firmware either...  |

| I'm not so lucky. I too have upgraded firmware, but it didn't seem to help me reach the inaccessible sites. I need to upgrade my router anyway. Can anyone suggest one that still behaves with talktalk? |

Barney,
What router to suggest? As my Router is now working you might want to consider the Linksys WAG354G. BUT from the sounds of things you will need that all important firmware upgrade.

I would like to thank all you wonderful people for pointing me in the right direction. My Netgear just wouldn't behave, so I invested in
WAG354G..upgraded it and it was all so wondefully easy. Just as well 'cos I'm not very bright |

Hi Guys
Was having a lot of bother with TT and access to websites.....
Try setting your MTU Speed setting in the router setup to 1400  (Usually defaults to 1500)This should reduce the packet loss/destruction that seems to be preventing certain websites from loading.

Are you are sure it's 1400? It seems a bit on the low side, did they say MTU or MSS? The MSS is the MTU minus 40  |

A quicky note to say that the problem has hit me as well a couple of days ago. I run a NETGEAR DG834GT router and have tried all sorts to no avail. Most sites load but some don't. If I search for TT it shows several results and one wont load but the other does and I can check my webmail this way as outlook express says downloading 1 of 24 but just sits there till it times out. Also the Spam box on Webmail has loads of wanted stuff in it including my latest TT bill. After mailing them they say that their mail wont be caught by the spam filter even though it is clearly there with [SPAM] in the header.
Finally reconnected my old SafeCom router and everything works properly (strange, but true) unfortunately it means I can't use my laptop via wireless. Just tried using the Netgear again and back to selective browsing and no Outlook express downloads again.
Has anyone got an answer to this one?????? |

People who are trying to use a router/modem: does your router/modem have a built-in firewall? I understand many do. If so, have you checked its settings?
You can generally get to the 'control page' of a router/modem by going to the URL http://192.168.1.1 in a browser, and it should be reasonably clear from there if you have a firewall, and how to view and change its settings. I suggest that, to start with, you turn the firewall completely off, and then try going to the web pages you couldn't before, to see if you can get them now. If there is no change, I guess the firewall is exonerated! If not, then keep the router firewall off, but make sure that Windows Firewall is on in ALL of the PCs connected to the router.
On the other hand, I think you can use the supplied modem and still use it to access the network from several PCs, if you have Windows XP: you need to connect both the original modem (and connect it to your telephone line through a filter) and the router/modem (which you use only as a router). I think Windows XP can be told to enable all the PCs on the network to connect to the Internet through the one modem, but I admit I don't know exactly how to configure Windows to do this. |
