Im assuming the En5830 is in fact the same unit. So to upgrade I understand the need to TFTP it in.

Problem is , when I hit the router, on 192.168.254.254 all I get is a basic screen that says :

Software Version :
v6.2.000-3

Current Login :
loginname

Current Status :
idle

Type 1 VPN
Type 2 VPN
Note: "Type 1 VPN" is the default configuration for the majority of VPN clients,
but if you experience problems with "Type 1 VPN" please select "Type 2 VPN"
(non VPN users can ignore these settings).

And nothing else. Ive tried telnetting in to 254 but i get no response.

There is a management port on the back so perhaps the only option is a direct serial connection ?

Or - am I barking up the wrong tree !

TIA

I think that the SB is in fact a 'crippled' EN Sad

Trying the serial connection with a console cable would be the best way to upgrade the firmware.

Or try this:

sb5830 doesn't need anything other than kernel.f2k (not asic.aic to worry about).

Bear with me, I just need to refresh myself on the process. I personally use Weird Solutions TFTP and BOOTP free clients rather than the config manager, but you have to wait for the the MAC address to show in BOOTP server.

Are you near me (Bucks/Oxon/Northants border), as I will happily do for you if you fancy popping over one evening?

sb5830 is the name of the router, in same way as EN5861 the name of the earlier type.

Like the EN5861, you can have the full version, and 'customised' versions, and BT did restrict theirs in the same way.

The sb5830 is an improvement on the EN5861 in the following areas:
Faster processor
Double the RAM (8Mb)
Double the flash (4Mb)
4 port 100Mb Switch as opposed to 4 port 10Mb hub
External PSU (though still not that reliable)

And I should say I have had a line uptime of over 400 days on one of my sb5830 on my Zen line, so the router is more stable (probably due to more memory - my old EN5861s used to panic with unable to allocate memory errors quite frequently under heavy use)
