New rules help wireless broadband

Regulatory

The government has set out new planning rules to allow households up and down the England to install a wider range of antennas and satellite dishes, which is good news for those wishing to use wireless broadband services.

The current regulations are inadequate because of the standards between the different types of technologies, causing inconsistencies and confusion over whether planning permission is required.
This move will especially benefit those living in remote areas, as they will be able to get higher broadband connections without the need to rely on a telephone cable to their house, without complex legal issues.
Under the changes, householders will not have to apply for special planning permission to site antennas. But restrictions will apply to the number, size and location of antennas, also antennas have to be installed in such a way to minimise the impact on the external appearance of buildings.

"The planning system needs to adapt to take account of changing technology. People want to get access to wireless broadband services and digital and satellite TV. These changes remove some of the red tape around new technology by updating the planning rules, whilst keeping protections for the local environment."
Yvette Cooper, Housing and planning minister
