BT block premium rate diallers

It seems to be all BT today!!

While it might not affect those who just use ADSL, those who also leave their modem connected for fax use can fall foul to the dreaded premium rate diallers.
BT have announced that they will actively block diallers which are known to belong to dodgy companies, which will be good news to the 19,000 who have been reported to have been hit but huge phone bills as a result of this menace.

Interestingly BT reveal they they only receive £1.85 for every £100 that customers run up.

"We have decided to act on this issue, which is causing genuine concern to us and thousands of our customers. When a premium rate number is suspected of being used to deliver rogue diallers we will block traffic to that number without waiting for the regulator to complete an investigation.
We need to minimise the number of customers being affected as quickly as we can and we can't allow any more of our customers to fall victim while the sometimes lengthy investigative process gets underway.
But customers also need to take action to protect themselves. We believe a substantial proportion of dialler problems aren't fraud, but are due to a lack of awareness from customers."

Gavin Patterson, BT group managing director, Consumer and Ventures
