A project to bring 100Mbps internet connectivity to US homes has been given funding to the tune of $7.5m by the US National Science Foundation.
The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (based at the word famous Carnegie Mellon University) along with several other institutions, plan to introduce the highspeed connectivity (initially called 100x100) to a sample 100 homes based on Fibre Optic technologies.
Whilst benefits of localised traffic can be clearly seen with connectivity of this nature (Video on Demand can become a real viable proposal with this bandwidth), internet traffic would be unlikely to be gain from this initiative - given that the vast majority of internet servers operate on pipes of lesser capability.
