This year’s awards will feature two new categories which were introduced in response to feedback and to give a more accurate reflection of the industry. Best Dedicated Hosting and Best Shared Hosting are replacing Best Business Host and Best Consumer Host.

Entry is open to all ISPs and is free even if they are not members of the ISPA, The online registration is set to close on  the 31st August, so ISPs should go to www.ispaawards.org.uk to select which categories they wish to enter.

It's that time of year when the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) reveals it's Internet Hero, Villain And Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) Awards nominees for 2007.

Ofcom, the EU and Vodafone's Annie Mullins have all been nominated for the Hero award, along with the Home Office's Simon Watkins and ex-Ofcom chief executive Stephen Carter.

For the Villain award those chosen are the US Government, for its online gaming measures, and the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), who forced information from two ISPs about customers who were believed to be illegally file-sharing.

Tne Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) nomination goes to Vodafone's Annie Mullins, who has been commended for her work in the area of child protection online. Bt has also been nominated "for developing and implementing the world's first internet system to block URLs of websites that were publishing potentially illegal child abuse content.”

This Sunday is the second annual 'International Internet-Free Day', where people are encouraged to stay offline and get in touch with the 'real world'.

And the strangest thing about the Global Ideas Bank idea is it's supported by an ISP, Bulldog!

"We want people to make the most of their lives. The internet should be adding to our lives, not taking away from it. To mark 'International Internet-Free day', we're encouraging net users to shut down their PC and spend the time away with friends and family."
David Fergusonn, marketing director, Bulldog

So why do we need an International Internet-Free Day? Global Ideas Bank say the world needs the day for several reasons, including;

  • Because it's all too easy to miss out on face-to-face interaction with your family, friends and neighbours.
  • Because blogging doesn't provide your daily vitamins and minerals.
  • Because you've got RSI coming on in your mouse arm.
  • Because the real world is a wonderful place.

So there you have it, but somehow we think Sunday won't be that quiet....

It's that time of year again so The Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA)  has launched this years' search for the internet industry’s champion performers with it's 8th annual awards.

The 2006 ISPAs will be made up of two divisions; the ISP division and the Special Awards division, it features six broadband categories and this year introduces three new award categories:-

  • Best Dial-Up
  • Best Uncontended Service
  • Best Streaming Service.

The participants in the ISP division will be tested and monitored on criteria including connection time, connection speed, upload and download speed, and DNS response. An independent judging panel of industry experts will then select the winners based on entrants’ value added services such as levels of customer support, the presence of service restrictions and online safety features.

“The ISPAs celebrate outstanding performance and service from ISPs across the Internet industry. It is a superb opportunity for consumers to see which services perform best under the scrutiny of the independent monitoring and judging process.”
Jessica Hendrie-Liao, Chair of the ISPA Council

The ISPA Council will select the shortlists and winners of the Internet Hero and Internet Villain categories again this year, but with recent events between some ISP's the villain could be a close run event!

The competition closes  on the 16th September with the winners (a losers) being announced at the awards ceremony and gala dinner will be held in London on 23rd February 2006.
