Namesco become the latest in a line of ISP acquisitions, as it has announced that it has been bought by Italian company Register.it S.p.A, more commonly known as Dada.

Dada have various domain and hosting interests mainly in Spain and Italy, and now seems to want to further it's interests  in the UK.

"Dada's purchase of Namesco is part of Dada Group's expansion strategy, indicating Dada's priority in strengthening its presence in the professional online services business. The investments in the domain and hosting sector which is represented by the Dada.pro division and already characterized by a solid international customer base, will allow Dada to further expand its offer towards more and more advanced services for companies and professionals online presence in a Web 2.0 perspective"
Paolo Barberis Chairman, Dada

There are no planned changes to operations in the UK, so Namesco broadband customers shouldn't be unduly worried.

There are lots of 'free' broadband offers out there, but Namesco seem to be offering just that...really free broadband for a year!!

Users can sign up to it's HomeStart package and will only have to pay the £60 connection fee, nothing else, no 'extra' services are required, and you even get a free router thrown in!!
Ok you are saying "I bet it's an 18 month contract" and that the price has a huge leap after 12 months, but you'd be wrong, it's just a 30 day contract, and if you decide to continue after the 12 months then it will cost only £10.95 a month.

So where is the catch? Actually there doesn't seem to be one, although the product isn't designed for the download junkie. It's a 512Kbps/256Kbps non Max connection with a 2GB a month cap, extra is £1 per extra GB. But for the light surfer it has to be one of the best deals around.

Whats on your mind for next years plans? A new car? Changing ISP? A 10 day trek up high in the Himalayan mountains?

Sam Hill, a Software Developer and Futurologist over at Namesco (formally of NDO) is planning on doing the latter to help both raise awareness of and sponsorship funds to ActionAid. Sam's trip up the Himalayan mountains starts 13th March 2006.

For those that wish to sponsor, the following shows how huge differences can be made, often with not so huge amounts of money.

  • 15 pounds would buy three basic HIV medical kits.
  • 80 pounds would feed a child in a shelter in India for a year.
  • 100 pounds could run a medical centre for 5 days - treating over 100 people in Gujarat.
  • 250 pounds would pay the annual salary of a teacher in an access centre in Ethiopia.

You can find out a little more about this arduous task and the opportunity to sponsor Sam over at SamGoesWalkies.com. We at Bug wish Sam the very best, and hope he raises lots of sponsorship for a very worthy cause.

Note : As of writing, Sam currently has sponsorship for around 75% of his £3,000 target.

Namesco has become the latest ISP to launch an 8Mbps ADSL connection in the UK.

The BroadbandMax product range offers connections from 256Kb upwards, with the top packages (HomeMax and OfficeMax) providing the fastest available speed depending on line conditions of between 2 and 8Mbps.

"Consumers are becoming increasingly aware that promises of 8Mb connections can be misleading as, in many cases, their line simply wont support the 8Mb speed. The message we are taking to market is completely transparent – We will offer you the fastest connection your BT line can handle, up to 8Mbps and will offer you a free upgrade as soon as things get faster - no hollow promises or misleading advertising."
"The Namesco proposition has always been customer driven; we are not interested in luring customers with false claims only for them to be disappointed, we want to attract customers to our core values of honesty, integrity, and service excellence."
James Griffin, Product Development and Marketing Manager

To launch the new offering, Namesco is giving away a free modem, setup, web hosting account and domain name on all packages with speeds of 512K and over, with migration from existing ISP's also included.

Look out for the adverts for BroadbandMax is set to commence this Sunday during the FA cup tie on BBC's Match of the day’s match between Worcester City and Huddersfield.
